Want to be a good neighbour? Try these tips:
1. Take your Garbage & Recycling out. Probably the most important in the list of good neighbour tips. Find out when Garbage & Recycling day is in your neighborhood. Make sure your garbage & recycling goes out no later than 7 am on pick up day. You can even rinse your recycling before putting it in the bin to avoid odors and pests. Do you need a recycling bin for your place? The City of Hamilton will provide you with one for FREE!
2. Clean Up Your balcony. Make sure you ask your landlord about what you can and can not store on your balcony. Barbecues on the balcony could be against the rules. Make sure you keep your balcony and apartment entrance way clear of unwanted furniture or other debris.
3. Follow fire Safety rules. Check out some home fire safety tips here or take fire safety program through the City of Hamilton. Be mindful of fire hazards and stay safe in your apartment. Ask the landlord any questions you may have concerning fire prevention in your building or unit?
4. Park Where You Should. Ask your landlord if parking is included in your rent. If you are using street parking instead, pay attention to the parking signs on your street. Here are some good neighbour tips when it comes to city parking rules:
Hamilton City parking bylaws
No parking on lawns
No parking for more than 12 continuous hours on any street
Park 3 metres from any fire hydrants
Park 9 metres from any crosswalk or intersection
Check out the Hamilton City Parking Bylaws here.
5. Respect Noise Limitations. Be mindful of the noise you are making and respect the noise by-laws in place. For more information, check out the Hamilton City noise by-laws here.
6. Get together responsibly. Make sure you have fun on your time off, but be safe and respectful of your neighbours. If you are consuming alcoholic beverages please do so responsibly at all times. You are responsible for your guests and their behavior as well.
7. Try Your Best to Avoid Those Pests. Cockroaches, mice or (worse) bed bugs should be reported to your landlord immediately. Most of these pests can be avoided if you know what to do. Pest proof your place in 15 minutes or visit the City of Hamilton Pest Control website for more information.
8. Get To Know Your Neighbours. Your neighbours might end up being lifelong friends or maybe they won’t. You will never know until you say hello. Either way– you should also be respectful or your neighbour’s property and proximity to your living space as well.
9. Offer a Helping Hand. Get involved in your community. Find out how you can lend a helping hand! All of these tips will help you and your neighbors enjoy a nice lifestyle in your Hamilton high-rise apartment.
